In preparation for the upcoming school year, Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas helped distribute more than 1,000 free backpacks to families across Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, Corona and Woodside.
Over the course of a week, the giveaway aimed to equip students in Queens with school supplies while easing the financial burden on families preparing for the new school year.
The first giveaway was held in Jackson Heights on Tuesday, Aug. 11, followed by events in East Elmhurst on Wednesday, Aug. 12, and Corona on Thursday, Aug. 13. For each giveaway, González-Rojas partnered with organizations including the Hispanic Federation, Laborers’ Local 1010, and MetroPlus Health.
The final event was held at the Sunnyside Community Services Cornerstone Program in Woodside on Friday, Aug. 14, where González-Rojas collaborated with Sunnyside Community Services.
The effort was supported by numerous elected officials, such as U.S. Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nydia Velázquez, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., as well as several members of the state assembly and city council.
“I was proud to work alongside so many fellow elected officials and trusted community partners to provide more than 1,000 families with backpacks, school supplies, and important resources for the year ahead,” González-Rojas said. “This event is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when we come together to support our neighbors and build strong, caring communities.”
González-Rojas said she will continue supporting families across the district by connecting them with essential resources and services throughout the year.
