González-Rojas to distribute over 1,000 free backpacks across western Queens

Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas is partnering with a number of local elected officials and organizations to host backpack giveaways for children across the 34th District this week.
González-Rojas will give away over 1,000 backpacks across four community events in her district, including giveaways in Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, Corona and Woodside.
The Hispanic Federation, Laborers Local 1010 and MetroPlus Health have teamed up with González-Rojas for each giveaway, which will present one backpack to each school-aged child while supplies last.
The back-to-school giveaways will commence with an event on 34th Avenue between 93rd and 94th Streets in Jackson Heights between 3-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11. U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Council Member Shekar Krishnan and Assemblymember Catalina Cruz have partnered with González-Rojas for the giveaway, while organizations such as the USTA, Charles B. Wang Community Health Center and Korean American Family Services Center will also be on hand.
On Wednesday, Aug. 12, González-Rojas will partner with Ocasio-Cortez and Council Member Tiffany Cabán to host a giveaway at Gorman Playground in East Elmhurst between 3 and 5 p.m. The giveaway, which takes place on 25th Avenue between 84th and 85th Streets, is also supported by the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network.
González-Rojas will host a giveaway in Corona between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13, partnering with Cruz, Ocasio-Cortez, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and Council Member Shanel Thomas-Henry. The event will take place at Corona Plaza at 40-04 National St. and is also supported by the New York City District Council of Carpenters.
The final giveaway will take place in Woodside on Friday, Aug. 14, in partnership with Sunnyside Community Services and U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez. The event, which runs from noon until 1:30 p.m., will take place at the Sunnyside Community Services Cornerstone Program at NYCHA Woodside Houses at 50-19 Broadway.
