Public Safety
Jessica González-Rojas' 5-Point Plan for Safe Communities
Every family deserves to feel safe. Whether they're walking home from the subway, sending their child to school, riding a bike, or enjoying a neighborhood park, true public safety is about more than responding to emergencies; it's about creating communities where people can thrive. That means investing in prevention, mental health services, safe streets, youth opportunities, and the resources that help neighborhoods succeed. As your State Senator, Jessica González-Rojas will work to build safer, healthier, and stronger communities for everyone.
1. Invest in Safety Infrastructure
Safe neighborhoods start with safe streets. Jessica González-Rojas will fight for better street lighting, safer intersections, protected bike lanes, traffic-calming measures, pedestrian improvements, and roadway redesigns that reduce crashes and save lives. She will prioritize investments that make it safer for children walking to school, seniors crossing busy streets, cyclists commuting to work, and families navigating their neighborhoods. This is particularly critical in dark corridors such as under the 7 train line along Roosevelt Ave. González-Rojas will also advocate for realigning NYPD precinct boundaries along Roosevelt Avenue so that the corridor falls within a single precinct jurisdiction, improving coordination, accountability, and responsiveness to public safety and quality-of-life concerns. Public safety means creating public spaces where everyone can move safely and confidently.
2. Expand Mental Health Crisis Response
Too many public safety challenges are rooted in untreated mental illness and substance abuse. Jessica González-Rojas will expand mobile crisis teams, supportive housing, and community-based treatment programs so people can get help before they reach a crisis point. Public safety and public health must work hand in hand.
3. Invest in Youth Opportunity and Prevention
The best crime prevention strategy is opportunity. Jessica González-Rojas will champion universal after-school programs, student summer jobs, youth mentorship, and violence interruption initiatives that keep young people engaged, supported, and on a path toward success. Every young person deserves opportunities, not obstacles.
4. Clean Streets Are Safe Streets
Public safety starts with clean, well-maintained neighborhoods. Too often, residents in Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, LeFrak City and Corona face overflowing trash baskets, illegal dumping, rodent infestations, pigeon droppings, and neglected public spaces that diminish quality of life and make communities feel less safe. Jessica González-Rojas will fight for stronger sanitation services, more frequent trash collection, expanded litter basket service, and targeted enforcement against illegal dumping. Jessica González-Rojas will work with her colleagues in city government to make this a priority.
5. Build Safer Neighborhoods Through Stronger Communities
Safe communities require more than policing. Jessica González-Rojas will fight for affordable housing, tenant protections, good-paying jobs, accessible health care, and support for small businesses. When families have stability and neighborhoods have resources, communities become stronger and safer for everyone.
Public safety is about more than responding to crime; it's about preventing it. By investing in people, supporting effective mental health services, improving our infrastructure, and strengthening our neighborhoods, we can build communities where every family feels safe, supported, and able to thrive.
